<Survey results>
The most commonly used payment methods in in-store for both men and women was "PayPay" (over 50%), followed by "Credit Card Payment" (over 48%).
When asked about payment methods they most frequently use in in-store, the top answer for both men and women was "PayPay" (over 50%), followed by "Credit Card Payment" (over 48%) and "Rakuten Pay" (over 24%). For men, the fourth answer was "transportation IC card" (24.4%) and for women, the fourth answer was "WAON" (19.1%).
Furthermore, when asked about the most commonly used payment methods in in-store, the results were split between men and women, with "PayPay" (27.8%) in first place and "Credit Card Payment" (25.7%) in second place for men, and "Credit Card Payment" (30.0%) and "PayPay" (26.8%) in first place for women. For both men and women, "Rakuten Pay" (9% or more) came in third place, and "d Pay" (7% or more) in fourth place, showing the enduring popularity of QR code payment.
For payments of 5,000 yen or less, the most popular payment methods are cash and QR code payments, while for payments over 5,000 yen, the most popular payment method is Credit Card Payment
When asked which payment methods they would use for each payment amount at in-store, the results showed that for payments under 5,000 yen, "cash" and "QR code payment" were most popular, while for payments over 5,000 yen, "Credit Card Payment" was the most popular. Also, as the payment amount increases, the use of payment methods other than "Credit Card Payment" decreases, but there is a certain need for cashless payment in all payment ranges, so it is important for business operators to introduce the most suitable cashless payment method to match the average customer spending at their stores.
The most popular place to use only cashless payment was "convenience stores" (43.6%), followed by "supermarkets and drugstores" (40.0%).
When asked about places in in-store where they would rather use cashless payment instead of cash, the top answer was "convenience stores" (43.6%), followed by "supermarkets and drugstores" (40.0%) and "gas stations" and "electronics retailers" (28.6%) in a tie for third place, revealing that cashless payment is increasingly being chosen when purchasing consumer goods at retail stores.
The most common place people have had trouble with because they were unable to pay cashlessly was "hospitals and clinics" (20.9%), followed by "restaurants" (16.2%) and "vending machines" (11.4%).
When asked about places where they have had trouble with not being able to use cashless payments at in-store, the top answer was "hospitals and clinics" (20.9%), followed by "restaurants" (16.2%) and "vending machines" (11.4%). Looking at the results by region, it turns out that there are more places in the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions where people have had trouble with not being able to use cashless payments than in other regions. It can be assumed that cashless payments are still not widely accepted in privately run and small hospitals and clinics, restaurants and vending machines across the country, or in some areas such as the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kyushu regions.
43.2% of people overall and 59.5% of those in their 20s have stopped using a service because it did not support cashless payments.
When asked if they had ever stopped making payments at a brick-and in-store did not support cashless payment, 43.2% answered "many times" or "a few times." Those who had stopped making payments were more than half in their teens to 30s, with those in their 20s in particular showing the highest need for cashless payment at 59.5%. Based on these results, because cashless payment support is directly linked to whether or not in-store supports cashless payment, it is important for stores that cater to younger generations to introduce cashless payment.
34.6% of people do not actively carry cash when going out, and if they do, 64.0% carry less than 10,000 yen.
When asked whether they carry cash when they go out, 63.2% answered "always carry it," while 34.6% answered "I only carry cash for emergencies," "sometimes I don't carry it depending on my plans or destination," or "I never carry it," indicating that there is a certain number of people who do not actively carry cash. Looking at the results by occupation, students in particular had the highest percentage of people who answered that they do not actively carry cash, at 59.4%, out of all occupations. This also shows that there is a high demand for cashless payments among young people.
In addition, when asked about the average amount of cash they carry in a day, by occupation, 57.5% of business managers and executives said they carried more than 10,001 yen, but overall 64.0% answered less than 10,000 yen. With the spread of cashless payments in Japan, it can be assumed that there is no longer a need to carry large amounts of cash.
